Is your Office Compliant?

As an Interior Designer, I love talking finishes, textures, zoning and creating beautiful, functional workplaces. But at its core, great design should also meet the requirements of current building regulations.

Compliance isn't the most glamorous part of a project, but it's one of the most important. From accessibility and fire safety to occupancy, lighting and means of escape, these considerations should be embedded into the design from the very beginning.

A few areas that must be considered during the design process include:

✔️ Accessible layouts that work for everyone.
✔️ Safe circulation routes and clear means of escape.
✔️ Appropriate lighting to support both wellbeing and emergency evacuation.
✔️ Space planning that considers occupancy levels and fire safety.
✔️ Materials and finishes that are suitable for commercial environments.
✔️ A workplace that supports employee wellbeing while meeting regulatory requirements.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that moving furniture or adding meeting rooms doesn't affect compliance. Even relatively small layout changes can impact accessibility, escape routes and fire strategy. I'm reminded of this every time I go shopping with my mum, who uses a wheelchair. Something as simple as a display stand in the wrong place, an aisle that's too narrow, or furniture positioned without thought can completely change how accessible a space feels.

Great workplace design is about balancing aesthetics, functionality and compliance from the very beginning. By considering these together, projects are more likely to run smoothly, costly changes can be avoided, and the finished space works better for everyone.
